Chin Surgery

Chin Surgery Overview

Gold Clinic Turkey have used facial implant and other chin surgery techniques to create symmetry among your facial features by establishing balance and proportion. Your procedure may be performed alone, or as a complement to other facial contouring procedures such as face lift, neck lift, cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty) or other procedures.

Am I candidate for facial implant and chin surgery?

Facial implant surgery, sometimes referred to as chin surgery or chin plastic surgery, is completed through the insertion of specially formed solid, biocompatible materials designed to enhance or augment the physical structure of your face. The precise type and size of facial implants best suited for you require an overall evaluation of your goals, the features you would like to change and your surgeon’s judgment.

Chin surgery, also known as mentoplasty, aims at reshaping the chin by enhancement with an implant, by cutting the boney chin and moving it forward (genioplasty), or by reduction of the chin bone. It’s not uncommon for chin surgery to be performed in addition to other facial surgery procedures to give the best overall facial balance.

Facial implant and chin surgery are highly individualized procedures, with the best results achieved by a thorough consultation with your surgeon.

Good candidates for facial implant and/or chin surgery include:

  • Individuals whose facial bones have reached physical maturity, which generally occurs in late adolescence
  • Individuals who are bothered by a small chin, weak jaw or lack of facial contour
  • Healthy individuals who have no major medical conditions
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for their facial implant and/or chin surgery.

How do I prepare for facial implant and chin surgery?

  • Lab testing or a medical evaluation
  • Taking certain medications or adjusting your current medications
  • Stopping smoking well in advance of surgery
  • Avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements due to increased risk of bleeding.

How is chin surgery completed?

There are many different ways to achieve symmetry of the chin area, including:

  • Chin augmentation
Which is completed through a small incision inside the mouth or underneath the chin, in addition to creating a small pocket above the chin bone and the below the chin muscle. A customized implant is then inserted into the pocket. Augmenting the chin can also be completed through an incision made inside the mouth through which the surgeon takes a portion of the chin bone, moves it slightly forward and secures it into place. After surgery, the chin may be taped to hold the implant in place until it is firmly in its new position.
  • Correction of a Double Chin (submental lipectomy)
Which treats excess skin, fat or muscle beneath your chin by making a small incision underneath the chin through which liposuction removes fat in this area. The muscles that cause bands in this area can also be cut or sutured together. Correction of a double chin is often performed along with a standard neck lift or cheek lift. A chin implant may also be recommended to compliment the overall basic shape and balance of the face.

What results can I expect?

The results of your facial implant procedure are visible almost immediately. Initial swelling will subside over the first week with the use of cold compresses, and continue to subside for the following two to four weeks. Swelling from facial implants should go away fully in one to two months as your final results appear.

After chin surgery, your chin will be swollen, firm and possibly bruised. Using cold compresses in the first 48 hours will significantly lessen the swelling, as will keeping your upper body elevated when resting. If cosmetic injectables were used as the primary treatment for your chin augmentation, the swelling and bruising may be less.

Final results from both facial implant and chin surgery procedures takes time. View our chin surgery before and after photos to see results from actual patients.

What is involved in recovery?

  • Cheek implants:
Cheek implant surgery recovery may include some discomfort and swelling, and possible difficulty moving your mouth and lips for several days. Your stitches will be removed within about a week. Stitches used inside the mouth dissolve on their own.
  • Chin implants:
Following chin implant surgery, you may experience some pain, swelling and bruising. Your stitches will be removed within about a week. Stitches used inside the mouth dissolve on their own.
  • Chin surgery:
Recovery from chin surgery involves some swelling, bruising and numbness for several weeks following surgery. You’ll have incisions in your mouth, increasing the risk for infection from the bacteria that normally reside there, so be especially attentive to caring for your mouth (oral hygiene) according to your surgeon’s instructions. During the recovery period, you’ll need to eat only soft foods and protect your face from bumps and other injuries.
  • Lip implants or lip augmentation:
Most lip enlargement techniques cause post-surgical swelling that can last for approximately one week. After that time, the lips may still be swollen, but presentable.
  • Lower jaw implants:
Lower jaw implants may cause some discomfort and significant swelling. You may also find it difficult to move your mouth and lips for several days. Although most of the swelling will subside within several days, it may take several months for all of the swelling to go down. Stitches used inside the mouth dissolve on their own.
